Privacy Policy
April 20, 2025 at 12:40 AM • 5 min read • 927 wordsSnout.nu ("we", "us", or "our") operates the services available at snout.nu, including blogging, image hosting, and email forwarding. This Privacy Policy explains how we handle your personal data across these services.
What Data We Process and Why
When you create an account and use our services, we process the following personal data:
- Account Data: Your chosen display name to create and manage your account. Providing an email is optional and is only used for account recovery.
- User Content: The text posts and images you upload to your blog. We process this to provide the core service, hosting your blog and the files (like images) you use within your posts. By uploading, you grant us the license needed to store and display that content until you delete it.
- Correspondence Data: Your email and message content if you contact us for support.
- Payment Information: We keep a minimal record of transactions (amount, method, date, and processor) for financial reconciliation and legal obligations. For certain payment methods, a transaction identifier is temporarily linked to your account for 28 days to manage chargebacks, after which the link is permanently removed. Your full payment details are handled by our processors (like Stripe), who are independent controllers of that data.
- Email Forwarding Data (for inbox.snout.nu): If you use our email forwarding service, we process the sender's email address, subject line, and message content sent to your forwarding address (e.g., bark@inbox.snout.nu). We process this data to forward these inquiries to your private dashboard and allow you to read and manage them there. This processing is necessary to provide the email forwarding service you request. You can delete these forwarded messages at any time from your dashboard.
Cookies
We use one essential cookie named "authToken" to keep you logged in during your session. It's removed when you close your browser. This cookie is strictly necessary to provide your account, so we do not use a consent banner. We do not use tracking, analytics, or marketing cookies.
Data Sharing and International Transfers
We use third-party providers to host our service. A current list is available at: https://help.snout.nu/posts/data-sub-processors.
Some providers are outside the European Economic Area (EEA). We ensure all such transfers are protected by appropriate legal safeguards. We do not sell your data. We will only disclose data to third parties like law enforcement if legally required to do so.
Data Retention
We keep your account and content until you ask us to delete it. This includes your blog posts, uploaded images, and forwarded email messages in your dashboard. After a verified deletion request, data is removed from our main systems. It may remain in encrypted backups for up to 28 days before permanent deletion.
Security and Abuse Prevention
We generally do not log or store your IP address when you use the service normally. However, to protect our systems, we process IP addresses to investigate and stop specific security threats or abuse.
For example: If someone attempts to gain unauthorized access to our servers, such as by trying to SSH in and brute-force passwords, which is entirely outside the scope of normal service use, their IP address will be automatically blocked using tools like fail2ban.
Your Rights Under the GDPR
You have the following rights regarding your personal data:
- Right of Access: You can request a copy of your personal data we hold.
- Right to Rectification: You can ask us to correct inaccurate or incomplete data.
- Right to Erasure (“Right to be Forgotten”): You can ask us to delete your personal data.
- Right to Restriction of Processing: You can ask us to temporarily limit how we use your data.
- Right to Data Portability: You can request a copy of your data in a structured, machine-readable format and can transmit it to another service.
- You can export your blog content at any time by visiting: snout.nu/export
- Right to Object: You can object to our processing of your data based on our legitimate interests.
- Rights related to Automated Decision-Making: We do not use automated decision-making or profiling.
- Right to Redress: You have the right to lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority in your country if you believe our processing of your data violates the law.
To exercise any of these rights, please contact us using the details below.
Analytics
We use two types of analytics:
- On snout.nu (our main site): We use Umami for anonymous, cookie-free analytics to understand general website usage. This data is aggregated and public: https://magic.snout.nu/share/HUxL1ZyyFnhlIs5v
- On your blog: We provide you with basic, public analytics about your visitors. This includes data like the visitor's country, page viewed, device type, and referrer source. We do not store IP addresses for this purpose. You and anyone else can view this data at https://analytics.snout.nu.
Limitations on Analytics Data Requests
The analytics data we process is anonymous and aggregate (e.g., "10 visitors from France"). It does not contain identifiers and cannot be linked back to a specific individual. Therefore, we are unable to locate, correct, or delete analytics data for a single, specific visitor.
What We Do Not Do
We do not use your data for marketing, advertising, automated decision-making, or profiling.
Policy Updates
We will notify you via your account dashboard before making any significant change to this policy that affects how we process your data or your rights.
